The Release of "Angel Eyes" marks the end of Shannon Kennedy's high
school career and features her playing and arranging talents. "Angel Eyes"
was recorded June 6th and 7th in the basement recording studio live at the
Orange County High School of the Arts. The project mostly features
Shannon Kennedy on soprano and alto saxophones as well as flute, but also
features other musicians on bari saxophone, bass, keyboards and drums.
Everything is a process, so this is just
a little bit about the process that
went into making this CD. "Angel Eyes"
was my first CD and I had a blast
recording it with my friends. I was
constantly learning on this project -
and it was one of the best musical
experiences I have had so far in my
career. I am already looking forward to
my next project. We recorded the CD
in two days at OCHSA in the
basement recording studio. Everyone in the group during the recording session was either 15 years old or 16 years old.

We recorded "Angel Eyes" in two
days in the basement at the
Orange County High School of the
Arts in Santa Ana, California. There
were six of us total working on the
project the two days - Greg Vail was there to help us out, Kyle Gish was
recording us, and then there was the four of us playing.
The songs I chose for the CD are all songs I either love, and the ones I
know people love to hear me play - when you listen to the CD, I am sure
you will be able to determine which is which.
The first day we recorded "Angel Eyes",
"Alone Together", and "Infant Eyes". I
came up with the arrangement we did on
"Angel Eyes" the night before we recorded
it, and was pretty pleased on how well
the group took to it in rehearsal the next
day.
The whole project was kind of last minute,
and I was doubtful it was even going to
happen, but was very pleased when it did.
We rehearsed twenty minutes before each
day of the recording and we never had to
do more than two takes on each song,
so the sessions went pretty quick.
The second day, we recorded "Song for my Father", "Maputo", and "Friends
and Strangers". Greg Vail played bari on Song for my Father - it was fun
having him play with us. Greg and I play "Song for my Father" every time we
play together. Since I was recording it, I knew I had to have him play on it
just out of tradition. "Maputo" and "Friends and Strangers" were interesting
to record because the other kids in the band had
never heard them before and had never played
them. The night before, I had found recordings of
the two songs, and brought them in only to find
out that they didn't sound anything like how I had
imagined them to, so we recorded them the way
that I heard them.
Once the music side of the CD was done, the art
and title part of the CD came up - and I have to
say that naming it was harder than playing on it.
My friend Rheuben Allen told me just to call it
"Angel Eyes" because it was my favorite song on
the CD and because I had angel eyes (which I
laughed at him for saying), but it is what I ended
up calling the CD.
